The good news is that several of these have simple fixes you can handle in a few minutes. The rest need a licensed technician, but knowing which is which saves you time, money, and a hot afternoon in Corsicana.

When cold air stops coming from the vents, the cause almost always falls into one of these nine categories. Work down the list from the simplest and least expensive to the most serious.

  1. Dirty air filter. A clogged filter is the single most common cause of weak cooling. When the filter chokes off airflow across the evaporator coil, the system cannot move enough warm air to cool your home, and the coil can ice over. Check the filter first and replace it if it is gray with dust.

  3. Low refrigerant or a leak. Refrigerant is not consumed during normal operation, so if the charge is low, there is a leak.   6. Tripped breaker. Your outdoor unit and indoor air handler are often on separate circuits. If the outdoor unit loses power at a tripped breaker, the indoor fan keeps blowing room-temperature air. Reset the breaker once; if it trips again, stop and call a professional, because a repeat trip points to an electrical fault.
  7. Failed capacitor. The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motors the jolt they need to start and keep running. A swollen or burned-out capacitor is a common, affordable failure that can leave the outdoor unit humming but not cooling. This is a repair for a trained technician.
  8. Blocked or closed vents and returns. Closed supply registers, furniture over a return, or a blocked return grille starve the system of airflow. Like a dirty filter, poor airflow weakens cooling and can freeze the coil. Make sure vents and returns are open and clear throughout the house.
  9. Failing compressor. The compressor is the heart of the system, and the most expensive part to replace. When it weakens or fails, the unit cannot circulate refrigerant, so it runs without producing cold air. Continuing to run a system with a struggling compressor only speeds up the damage.
