A geothermal heat pump shares some components with conventional equipment and adds several that no other residential system has. Circulating pumps, buried loop fields, refrigerant-to-water coaxial heat exchangers and desuperheaters all require diagnostic approaches that standard HVAC training does not cover.

That is why a system running poorly is so often misdiagnosed.
